My PC fights cancer 24/7 by being part of Stanford U's 'Folding @ Home' project.This is a distributed computing project where 1.3 million folks are running background jobs on their PCs. Stanford collects the data which is used for cancer research. The name "Folding" refers to the way proteins assemble themselves, or "fold."
The folding program gets out of the way when you use your PC. There is very little impact. I leave mine running, just switch off the monitor and walk away.
