Post subject:  Steering box questions/suggestions

Hi guys, back again with another tech question.

My steering box is worn and due for replacement, so I'm looking for something to replace it with that's a bit beefier than the stock one, but still a reasonable price. Other than browsing websites to look at prices, I don't really know where for comparing one to another. What I'm looking for doesn't need to be something crazy since I do mostly street driving, but stronger than stock. If that makes any sense.

Thanks in advance. :)

You can swap in a box from a '99 Durango, bolts right in. People tell me they buy a referb Durango one from Advance or AutoZone, then return the old Jeep one for the core refund. Here is some NAPA info I've been hanging on to for when I do it. NAPA guys tend to be sharper, so the 'wrong core' thing is more of a risk. I plan to get the NSP88278131.

New part # according to the NAPA website catalog.

NSP88278139 is a 2-15/16ths turns Lock-to-lock 99 Durango/Dakota box.
It is NOT the snowplow package.
Cost is 239 and 111 core charge.

NSP88278130 is a 3-3/8ths turns Lock-to-lock Dakota box.
Cost is 189 and 222 core charge.

NSP88278131 is a 3-3/8ths turns Lock-to-lock Durango/Dakota box.
This one IS the snowplow package.
Cost is 189 and 83 core charge

NSP88278121 is a 3-1/16th turns Lock-to-lock Jeep box.
Cost is 245 and 167 core charge.

NSP88278133 is a 3-3/8ths turns Lock-to-lock Jeep box.
Cost is 189 and 222 core charge.

Thanks for all the part numbers. I've been looking at that upgrade also since my pitman arm has a lot of play from the steering box shaft. It looks like the previous owner didn't tighten down the nut when they put the PSC steering box in it and now the splines are all messed up and allow for the arm to move around.

Sorry for the late response, but I was doing some of my own research and spoke with some other people, and I'm going to go with a reconditioned TJ box. While I plan on keeping the truck for as long as possible, the original box lasted almost 12 years and 134,000 miles under normal conditions. I'm sure a reconditioned box will last me until I get a new vehicle.

Interesting point. I'm usually not a fan of 'trading up' when there was no real problem other than normal long term wear and tear. My YJ box is original, 17 years and 165,000 mi. I think this time though, since it's a bolt in and also no real price difference (a rebuild is mostly labor), I'm going with the upgrade. I did verify just yesterday (while ensuring the centering was right on my steering geometry) that my YJ is a 3-3/8 lock to lock version, which is what I would replace it with.
